summer is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors, move your body, and soak up some sunshine - but it’s also when our bodies need a little extra care! whether you're heading to the beach, going for a walk, or just enjoying the longer days, these healthy habits will help you stay energized, protected, and feeling your best all summer long.
1. wear sunscreen every day

even on cloudy days, UV rays can damage your skin. choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and reapply every two hours - especially if you’re swimming or sweating. This helps prevent sunburn, skin aging, and reduces your risk of skin cancer.
dru pro tip: look for mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for a skin-friendly, reef-safe option.
2. hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

hot weather and outdoor activities mean you sweat more - and lose more fluids. aim for 8–10 cups of water daily, or more if you're active. staying hydrated supports your energy, digestion, and skin health. you can always know if your water intake is sufficient by the color or your urine - if it is pale yellow or clear, you’re probably well-hydrated!
dru pro tip: add citrus fruits or berries and herbs like mint or basil to your water to give it a little flavor without adding a crazy amount of calories.
3. eat fresh, water-rich foods

summer is bursting with fruits and veggies that naturally help you stay cool and hydrated (don't you just love how nature works!). think watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, berries, and leafy greens. these foods provide essential vitamins and antioxidants too!
dru pro tip: you can get lots of different sources of vitamins from different types of fruits so make a fruit salad with mint or blend a refreshing green smoothie to get a delicious mix of goodness.
4. exercise early or late

avoid exercising in the midday heat (10 a.m.–4 p.m.). instead, get moving during the cooler parts of the day. morning walks, evening yoga, or a sunrise bike ride are great options.
dru pro tip: make sure that you don't use the summer heat as an excuse to skip your workout! finding the right time to exercise will help you maintain your fitness levels while keeping you cool.
5. protect your eyes and skin

in addition to sunscreen, wear UV-blocking sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and lightweight, breathable clothing with UV protection. your eyes and skin will thank you!
dru pro tip: UV exposure can contribute to cataracts over time—so don’t skip the shades. keep your eyes healthy and protected to avoid complications in the future.
6. take breaks in the shade

when you’re out for a long time, give your body a rest from direct sun. sitting in the shade helps prevent overheating and sun exhaustion.
dru pro tip: pack an umbrella or pop-up tent for park days and beach outings - it may feel weird at first but your body will thank you later!
your summer, your wellness
taking care of your body in the summer doesn’t have to be complicated. these simple habits can help you enjoy the sunshine while staying safe, hydrated, and energized. stay active, but don’t overdo it in the heat. modify your routine if it’s too hot: try indoor workouts, swimming, or gentle stretching. movement boosts your mood, immunity, and sleep. whether you're planning an adventure or just relaxing at home, make this your healthiest summer yet!
